Rapid user growth since launch, with strong traction in Korea and Southeast Asia
Growth driven by proprietary AI engine ixi and expansion of experiential learning content
New features like My Profile and My Room enhance social interaction among users
LG Uplus announced that its kids' metaverse platform KidsTopia has exceeded 500,000 cumulative users across Korea and overseas markets just 16 months after its launch in May 2023.
KidsTopia—named by combining “Kids” and “Utopia”—offers an immersive 3D virtual space where children can learn about foreign languages, animals, dinosaurs, and space through interactive experiences with AI characters.
User growth has accelerated thanks to the platform’s global localization strategy and its proprietary AI engine ixi, which powers real-time conversations between users and virtual characters. Subscriber milestones include 100,000 in Sept. 2023, 300,000 in April 2024, and 500,000 in August 2024.
As of August, Korean users account for 40% of total users (~200,000), followed by the Philippines with 32% (~160,000) and Malaysia with 22% (~110,000). KidsTopia is currently available in eight countries, including Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia, the U.S., Japan, Thailand, Singapore, and Brunei.
The introduction of generative AI for natural-language conversations and a growing library of experiential educational content has played a key role in the platform’s popularity. Featured programs include Earth Love Explorers—a metaverse version of offline nature learning—and Quiz Run, a gamified English learning experience.
To enhance social interaction among users, LG Uplus recently launched two new community features: My Profile, which allows avatar customization and profile creation, and My Room, where users can build and decorate their own virtual space and invite others to visit.
Looking ahead, LG Uplus plans to expand partnerships with brands interested in kids marketing and aims to monetize the platform more actively. The company also plans to enhance safety features (e.g., profanity filtering), introduce new content, and further develop its AI technology—with a goal of reaching 1 million cumulative users by the end of 2024.
CSO Jihoon Kim stated,
“We’re proud to have reached the 500,000-user milestone. This result reflects our continued effort to create a fun and meaningful learning space for children. We’ll keep evolving KidsTopia into a leading global platform that meets the real needs of young users.”
